The gas tanks are usually installed in the gas box or cylinder box or underfloor. However, it is also conceivable to install the tank on the loading area, as long as this has no connection to the interior or the gas tank is separated from it in a gas-tight manner. This is the case with panel vans, for example.
Gas tanks in motorhomes should be secured in accordance with the EN 1949 and ECE 67R-01 guidelines. These guidelines stipulate which material is required for fastening. The number of fixing points required depends, among other things, on the total volume of the tank. An extract can be found in the following table.
EN 1949 Annex B regulates the requirements for tank fastenings up to a capacity of 150 litres.
Tank capacity in litres | Minimum washer dimensions Diameter x thickness in mm | Minimum dimensions for tank straps Diameter x thickness in mm | Minimum diameter of screw in mm |
up to 85 | 30 x 1,5 25 x 2,5 | 20 x 3,0 30 x 1,5 | 8 8 |
85 - 100 | 30 x 1,5 25 x 2,5 | 30 x 3,0 20 x 3,0* | 10 8* |
100 - 150 | 50 x 2,0 30 x 3,0 | 50 x 6,0 50 x 3,0** | 12 10** |
* In this case, the LPG tank must be secured with at least three container straps.
** In this case, the car gas tank must be secured with at least four container straps.
The cost of installing a refillable gas tank in a motorhome varies depending on the size and installation location in the vehicle. In general, the installation costs for a permanently installed gas tank in a motorhome are between 1300 and 2000 EUR. For more complex solutions, such as tanks with underfloor mounting or multi-tank solutions, the costs are higher, often between 3000 and 4000 EUR. It is important not to skimp on safety and convenience when purchasing and to consider installing a crash sensor with electronic remote control and a remote tank level indicator. These extras also increase the overall price.
The installation of a gas tank in a motorhome may only be carried out by certified and trained specialist workshops. After installation, the gas tank must be approved by an expert and entered in the vehicle documents. This is very important to ensure that the insurance for your vehicle is not cancelled.
