Correct battery charging is ensured by the VOTRONIC Automatic Chargers, which are equipped with the latest charging technology and are designed for all commercially available lead batteries (see chapter Charging technology). For the correct handling of the batteries in daily operation, VOTRONIC's peripheral devices work in the background and provide automated charge control and battery monitoring.
In motorhomes, campervans, emergency vehicles, etc., the batteries must also supply energy when the vehicle is stationary. Therefore, several batteries are usually installed in these vehicles, which are used separately for driving and stationary operation.
A distinction is made between starter and supply battery(ies). As the name suggests, one battery is responsible for reliably starting the vehicle, while the other(s) is responsible for supplying power to the electrical devices in the vehicle. To ensure that each battery circuit works reliably and that the vehicle's electrical concept functions, various devices are used to control the charge while the vehicle is in motion.
StandBy-Charger
The VOTRONIC StandBy-Charger is used to automatically recharge and maintain the charge of the starter battery or the auxiliary battery if the mains charger, the solar charge controller or the generator only has one charge output. The unit can be easily retrofitted by simply connecting it between the on-board and starter battery or on-board and auxiliary battery without having to change the existing wiring.
If, for example, the mains charger is in operation and charging the on-board battery, the second battery (starting battery or additional battery) is also charged with a small part of the charging current, depending on the state of charge. This charge retention works automatically and can be recognised by an increased voltage level of the second battery. Overcharging of the second battery is excluded, as the charging voltage is lowered by at least 0.6V and the charging current is limited to 3A (24V variant: 2A).
Notes:
- Make sure that both batteries have the same nominal battery voltage 12 V / 12 V or 24 V / 24 V, as mixed operation 12 V and 24 V is not possible.
- The StandBy-Charger is only suitable for use with lead batteries (acid / gel / AGM technology), not for the combination of LiFePO4 and lead (starter) batteries.
