The water pump is the heart of the onboard supply, moving fresh water from the tank to the faucet and shower. RVs and campers mainly use 12V submersible pumps and self-priming diaphragm pumps. The right water pump depends on flow rate, pressure and connection type.
| Submersible | Diaphragm | |
| Mounting | inside the tank | outside the tank |
| Outlets | 1-2 | several at once |
| Pressure | low | constant, higher |
A built-in pressure switch starts the pump automatically on demand. Most models run on 12V and connect directly to the water system.
With clean water and occasional care, onboard pumps last many seasons. Scale and debris in the tank are the most common cause of early wear.
