Gas bottle, refillable gas bottle or gas tank – without gas in the camper propane tank, camping is immediately less fun. The kitchen, heating, fridge and small appliances all run on gas. Gas cylinders are the cheapest solution, but you have to lug them around all the time to refill or replace them. Refillable gas bottles and LPG tanks are an alternative. Refillable gas bottles are considered to be permanently installed and are cheaper than LPG tanks. Retrofitting is easier and cheaper than with LPG tanks. LPG tanks, on the other hand, have a significantly larger capacity.

Retrofitting a LPG tank in a motorhome – the advantages

Higher capacities
LPG tanks have capacities of up to 200 liters.

Additional weight
With motorhomes, weight is sometimes an issue. Especially if you have one that is already at the weight limit, you have to consider that your driver’s license may no longer be sufficient.

Where are LPG tanks installed in the camper propane tank?

LPG tanks are usually installed in the gas locker or cylinder box or under the floor. This means under the vehicle. However, it is also conceivable to install the tank on the loading area, as long as this has no connection to the interior or the LPG tank is separated from it in a gas-tight manner. This is the case with panel vans, for example.

How must LPG tanks be secured in the camper?

LPG tanks in camper vans should be secured in accordance with the EN 1949 and ECE 67R-01 guidelines. These guidelines stipulate which material is required for fastening. The number of fixing points required depends, among other things, on the total volume of the tank. An excerpt can be found in the following table.

EN 1949 Annex B regulates the requirements for tank fastenings up to a capacity of 150 liters.

What does a LPG tank in a camper van cost?

The cost of installing a refillable LPG tank in a motorhome varies depending on the size and installation location in the vehicle. In general, the installation costs for a permanently installed LPG tank in a motorhome are between 1300 and 2000 euros. For more complex solutions, such as tanks with underfloor mounting or multi-tank solutions, the costs are higher, often between EUR 3000 and 4000. It is important not to skimp on safety and comfort when purchasing and to consider installing a crash sensor with electronic remote control and a remote tank level indicator. These extras also increase the overall price.
