Good news for motorhome and caravan owners: suitable refillable LPG bottles can now be filled at public Autogas stations in Germany. The TRBS 3151 amendment, published on 20 October 2026, closes a gap: G 607 (June 2026) already covered the installation of pressure vessels designed for user refilling (gas bottles), but filling at stations remained prohibited.
Can you fill refillable gas bottles in Germany?
Yes, if CE-marked bottles are installed to the current G 607 and the manufacturer’s instructions. Bottles bearing the π mark remain excluded from this arrangement.
- Secure the bottle firmly while allowing removal without tools, for example using a CAMPKO gas bottle holder with star knob screws.
- Use a suitable safety coupling with a protected release mechanism secured by a tamper-evident seal, such as an ALUGAS quick coupling or a CAMPKO quick coupling.
- Refill only while the bottle is secured, through an external filling point, for example a CAMPKO LPG filler valve.
- The LPG filling point must be at least 500 mm from windows, living-area vents and exhaust outlets.
- The LPG filling line must not pass through the living area.
- The bottle’s multivalve must include an 80% fill stop, level gauge, shut-off valve and safety valve.
Always follow the bottle manufacturer’s instructions.
What about bottles already installed?
Before the next refill, a specialist workshop should check whether the installation meets the current G 607. Any necessary modifications must then be checked by a recognised G 607 inspector.
Which gas inspections are required in Germany?
The gas installation must be inspected every 24 months, before first use and before reuse after modifications requiring inspection. This is separate from Germany’s vehicle roadworthiness test (HU). The bottle itself must be inspected every 10 years.
