The ALUGAS TRAVELMate gas cylinder is used in motorhomes, caravans and other recreational vehicles in various European countries. Technically, ALUGAS describes it as a self-filling pressure vessel with a multifunctional valve. Depending on the target market, the TRAVELMate is fitted with a country-specific dispensing connection.
ALUGAS TRAVELMate: 21.8 or 21.7 thread?
The country-specific connections on the multifunctional valves can be distinguished at a glance by the colour of the gas shut-off valve. ALUGAS states the following in the TRAVELMate installation instructions, document no. 001, issue 01.06.2026, revision 03:
Multifunction valves with a blue gas shut-off valve have a 21.8 thread and are intended for use, for example, in Germany. Multifunction valves with a yellow gas shut-off valve have a 21.7 thread and are intended for use, for example, in Switzerland, France and Belgium.

Gas cylinders in motorhomes: why the right connection is important
When fitting a gas cylinder in a motorhome, it is crucial to note that if a TRAVELMate cylinder is installed that does not comply with the regulations and specifications of the relevant country, this can lead to problems with operation, inspection and liability. Gas systems are safety-critical installations in which all components must be professionally installed, approved and compatible with one another.
Adapter on the ALUGAS TRAVELMate gas cylinder
ALUGAS states in the documentation for the TRAVELMate gas cylinder that only approved components and materials may be used. For example, if a 21.7 version intended for use in France is connected to a German gas cylinder connection via an adapter, this adapter must be approved for the specific application.
ALUGAS warns against the use of non-approved adaptors, hoses and fittings, as these can lead to incompatibilities, premature wear and damage to the system. Furthermore, ALUGAS states that it accepts no liability for damage caused by non-approved third-party components or modifications.
UN Regulation No. 67: as few gas-carrying connections as possible
UN Regulation No. 67 sets out requirements for gas-carrying connections between the components of an LPG system. Section 17.8.6 expressly states that the number of connections must be kept to a minimum.
ALUGAS applies this principle specifically to the TRAVELMate and recommends avoiding the use of adaptors or nipples as intermediate fittings. A connection that fits directly and is approved for the intended purpose is therefore generally preferable.
Gas testing in motorhomes: G 607 and connection size
The current edition of the DVGW worksheet G 607, dated June 2026, regulates the operation and testing of relevant liquefied petroleum gas systems in road vehicles and mobile homes.
G 607 specifies the size W 21.8 × 1.814 LH for the relevant cylinder-side connections. The 21.7 version specified by ALUGAS for France, for example, is therefore not identical.
We therefore recommend that our customers, not least for liability reasons, always have the installation carried out by a qualified technician in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and using the version intended for the relevant target market.
