Motorhome door catch: What you should know before you buy

Why is motorhome door catch protection so important for motorhomes and caravans?

Burglars and thieves naturally look for objects that they can open as quickly, easily and silently as possible. This is why motorhomes and caravans appear to be an attractive target at first glance. The vehicles are only secured at the factory with easy-to-pick door locks, especially on the rear and side doors. It is therefore advisable to retrofit additional caravan door security.

Retrofitted door locks and security handles from Thule, Fiamma or Heosafe, for example, provide a remedy.

What types of RV entry door locks and caravan door locks are there?

There are essentially two different security systems for caravans, motorhomes and camper vans.

Security locks that replace the factory-fitted door lock with a higher-quality one.
Security bolts which are fitted in addition to the door lock already installed and therefore have a supporting effect.

Security bars can be infinitely adjusted and can therefore be customised to the dimensions of the driver's cab. The safety bar for motorhomes is inserted between the driver and passenger doors from the inside.

Safety handles and entry aids from Thule or Fiamma fulfil two functions at once. Firstly, the handle can be folded over the door and locked. This means that the body door is doubly secured via the door lock and also via the access aid. When folded out, the safety handle serves as an additional entry aid into the motorhome body. Fiamma and Thule safety handles are fitted to the body wall of the motorhome.

Fiamma Safe Door and Thule Door Lock are solid door bolts that are attached to the exterior body door and serve as burglary protection in addition to the factory-fitted door lock. Special security locks such as the Thule Van Lock or the HEOSafe Van Security are available for sliding door systems such as those found on panel vans or camper vans.

The various security systems can be combined and can therefore increase burglary protection in the camper. In addition to the actual increased security provided by retrofitting an RV entry door lock, its visibility alone can deter potential burglars. Potential burglars are primarily interested in getting into the vehicle interior with little effort, silently and as quickly as possible.
